I recently met with a couple who I had previously spoken to about insurance coverage, but they had decided not to move forward. They thought, “We don’t need insurance; it’s a waste of money”. I was pleasantly surprised when I received a phone call from this couple wanting to meet with me to discuss insurance coverage.
Here is a little background. This couple is in their mid 30′s and have two young children; the mother is currently on maternity leave. They have a decent sized mortgage in a prominent Calgary community. Financially, this family is very stable. However, one unfortunate incident could put them into financial turmoil for the remainder of their lives.
So the main question is, what made them change their minds and consider insurance now?
Unfortunately, the reason they called me was to explain that a family friend was diagnosed with cancer. This gentleman went to the doctor one day, was admitted to the hospital soon after and is currently going through radiation and chemotherapy treatments regularly to fight this horrible illness. It made them think, “What would happen if one of us was in his situation?” and prompted them to phone me. I’m happy to say that they have since purchased life AND critical illness insurance to protect their family’s financial future.
While it may take an illness within your close family or friends for you to realize the importance of insurance, I’d urge you to consider it sooner than later. That illness may not strike your family or friends, it could happen to you and by then it’s too late! Make the decision to protect yourself and your family NOW, before you’re forced to live with the consequences. Why wait?
